Enlightened listening – Sunlight on the way I hear

Wisconsin sunset 11/8 at 4:45.

Okey dokey, yous guys, I know there are regional ways of saying things and maybe previously I wasn’t paying as much attention as I could have been (could of done).  All right-y, now I’m tryin’ to. Yeah, that’s the way we seem to talk round here. How crazy is that? Woot, woot!

Darn-near nuts, a real whack-job, and that’s the beauty of it. I’m sure.  It’s like noticing the sky, the sunset and the photographing it. There are many nuances. Seeing is not the same. Well in listening to dialect, hearing is never the same, yup. Yeah, truly not the same.

There are all these short phrases that I’ve suddenly become aware of because I’m writing dialogue for NaNoWriMo. It’s not that yeah hey dere, no sir-ee bob, but there are a lot of yeah, you guys. And a fair number of references to manure, as in “really, no shit” and “crap, that’s a bummer.” And ‘that’ is used  in places where that it doesn’t need to be, have ya noticed?

Hunting, fishing, drinking and Harley/ATV/UTV/snowmobiling references pepper our speech. And everyone knows ‘the pack,’ tailgating, brats and a brew. Friday night fish fries are available at every restaurant and many bars. Many, many, many bars. That’s where we’re at.

Woot, woot, yeah, that’s a good one! Time for a brew.

Yeah, you guys take care then.

What about you, has your writing enlightened your hearing?

It would be great to hear from you!
